Merely a Tablespoon

....is all you need of dishwasher detergent. Maybe even less depending on your dishwasher. If you already knew this.....WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ME?!

I've been filling up my little cup(s) to the brim on the interior dishwasher door for as long as I can remember. But recently I stumbled across a magazine article written by a dishwasher designer in which he stated that many dishwashers can produce clean dishes on as little as a teaspoon of detergent. After some experimenting, I've discovered that my dishwasher needs a good tablespoon to do its job.

But still, I feel like I won the lottory.
Life. is. good.

  2. I heard this a while back as well. Have been filling only one of the two detergent cups in our dishwasher ever since and everything comes out plenty clean. Love saving our soap pennies too!

  4. What??? I've always, ALWAYS filled the cup all the way. How have I made it this far in my life and nobody told me this?! That's why I love visiting here, Sarah Barry. You always have practical, common sense ideas like these. Love it, and thanks!

  7. That's true, and did you know that you only need 1/4 cup of laundry detergent in your washer to get your clothes clean - even for a large load?

  8. You would like the Tightwad Gazette series of books. They are classics on frugality. The author is more extreme than I ever want to be but I love the way she looks at money and the way she raised a large family well on a small income. I have incorporated lots of her tips into my life.

  9. I don't have a dishwasher, but I know that you can use less laundry detergent than the lines on the cup. Them manufacturers are verrrrry good at getting us to use their products up so we buy more!
